The camp is approximately three (3.0) miles away from the bucolic Village of Tannersville, NY and 6.0 miles from the more metropolitan Town of Hunter.  Being a vacation destination less than 2.0 hours from New York City, amenities abound.

The following is an abbreviated list of tried and true things to do:

RESTAURANTS:

  • Last Chance Antiques and Cheese Cafe – an institution for camp guests.  As close to an American bistro as you will find in the Catskill Mountains.  Part restaurant, part antique shop, part gourmet store, part corner store, the Cheese Shop has been offering sandwiches, soups and hearty American fare to tired campers and their guests for nearly 30 years.  An ample (over 300 item long) list of imported beers (including Aldaris from Latvia).  The owners recently expanded their operation by opening a full-service tavern next to the restaurant that is open late night.  The owners have been very forthcoming to their Latvian clientele and the camp is recognized as a long-time patron of this establishment.  Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Tel:  518-589-6424; www.lastchance.com
  • The Swiss Chalet Hotel and Restaurant – a relatively formal and upscale dining experience.  Traditional Swiss food that includes schnitzels, wursts, sauerbraten, fondue and other Swiss-German delicacies.  A rare for the area white table cloth setting, decorated with cow bells, cuckoo clocks and Swiss horns.  The only thing missing from the alpine kitsch is someone echoing “Ricola” from the back room.  Serving dinner only.  Reservations recommended.  Tel.  518-589-5445; www.swisschalethotelrestaurant.com
  • Maggie’s Krooked Café and Juice Bar – a breakfast enclave that prides itself on serving made to order all natural breakfast fare.  Whether it's eggs Florentine, jardinière, or Benedict expect them to be farm fresh and lovingly prepared.  The café also serves no less than 4-5 styles of pancakes served with authentic maple syrup.  Wash it all down with coffee, herbal tea or something freshly squeezed from the juice bar.  Lines on the weekends are out the door, so don’t plan to squeeze in a quick breakfast before the Sunday’s church service unless you are an early riser.  Breakfast is available all day and lunch.  Tel: 518-589-6101; www.krookedcafe.com
  • Curran’s – 6080 Main Street, Tannersville, NY  12485 – a restaurant and tap room that serves “innovative, seasonal and regional cuisine, inspired by the traditions of the Catskills”.  This is one of the more formal dining options in the area and the Executive Chef is ambitious.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS

  • Howe Caverns – for the spelunker or casual tourist alike, caves carved from limestone over millions of years.  www.howecaverns.com
  • Tubing on the Esopus River – experience the Esopus the blue collar way.  Why canoe or kayak when you can float the rapids in an old truck tire inner tube?   Town Tinker Tube Rentals  www.towntinker.com
  • Hunter Mountain Sky Ride – they say “what goes up, must come down”. Fortunately for those not adept at sliding down an icy mountain on two planks or a modified ironing board, there is an opportunity to bask in the glory of the mountain landscape in the summertime.  Ride the Hunter Mountain Summer Sky Ride up and down; no pain and all the gain!  www.huntermtn.com
